In a suburban villa, a woman of means is murdered. Police Superintendent Zdychynec from the Prague Liben neighborhood reports the case to Police Councilman Vacátko, upon whose order an investigation is launched immediately. Zdychynec begins to suspect the wooer of his own daughter, a handsome dragoon named Rudi, of the crime. In Rudi's absence, Zdychynec searches his rented room in the apartment of the elegant Mrs Dragicová. All his findings - among others, sand left on Rudi's jackboots and a decent amount of money in his bedside table - convince the superintendent that he is following the right lead, especially when Rudi refuses to say where he was at the time of the murder.

Kopřiva), who believes that Mr. Mlácen suffers from some kind of fixed idea and is mentally ill, promises him that he will buy his two bells back...

Ichabod Crane becomes the headmaster at a schoolhouse. He falls for Katrina Van Tassel but she has a lover: Brom Bones. Brom scares him off acting as the Headless Horseman only to meet the real one himself.

He wants to get married, and his uncle will lend him money for the wedding if he collects the debts from the tenants. The woman prepares the money, but when the young lieutenant signs the bills and hands them over to her, she does not give him the money. Upon his return, the lieutenant confides everything to his uncle, who then sets out to collect them himself...
